Keep the Important Things Inside
Many things are passed down from one generation to the other. For example, older generations pass on their language to the new generations that come after. This shared language can then become the base for a bridge between generations that allow other connections to grow. But not all families experience the intergenerational passing of language, especially if there is an immigration story. However, other things are passed intergenerationally within families, like belief systems, religion, views of the world, and what you are supposed to do with the ‘important things’. Whether it is passed on didactically or silently, older members of the family teach the younger ones what you are supposed to do with the ‘important things’ in your life. Are they things that you talk about openly freely with others? Or are they things that are meant to be hidden and tucked away, safe from any prying eyes or outside influence? What are some other things that have been passed down to you through generations in your family? And what do you want to do with these teachings of the older generations of your family?
