Failure of Will

"Immigrants don't believe in therapists. The Koreans I've known would judge it to be a failure of will, the kind of thing that happens to other ethnicities: it's like being lazy, or unfilial." R.O. Kwan in The Incendiaries

Many cultures, including many Asian American families, believe that therapy is a shameful thing to do. Going to therapy is like an acknowledgement that there is something deeply shamefully ‘wrong’ with you, or even worse, your family. Have you ever been given this message, that therapy is a failure of will? That it’s something that others can do, but not you? Is there a part of you that still believes that going to therapy means you are lazy or that you failed your family?
