Like a Child

"My father's English was book-learned, ill-suited to fast-talking LA. If he wished to buy cigarettes, he had to point, like a child." R.O. Kwon in the Incendiaries

There are many losses and struggles that accompany an immigration story - leaving behind your loved ones and family, leaving behind a culture that you know and feel comfortable in, and leaving behind comfort and safety. And if you are a child of an immigrant family, there may be experiences unique to your immigrant identity too, like witnessing your parents acting like a child in order to navigate through a world that is foreign to them but familiar to you. Have you ever witnessed your parents act like a child out of necessity of survival? What was that experience like for you? What were your reactions when you witnessed it as a child, and as you look back on those experiences, what feelings and thoughts come up for you now? Are they the same or different? Is there anything you would like to say to that child? To your parents?
