Acting at Being Anyone

"She saw herself as an American soul in a Korean body - she always felt as if she were acting at being either Korean or American, and as aresult always acting at being anyone at all." Eugenia Kim in The Kinship of Secrets

For those of us who identify as Asian American, we hold multiple cultural identities: one of the country we are from, and one of the country we are in. And those identities can intersect in ways that are harmonious, but also in ways of tension and conflict. And when those identities are in tension, we may switch between those identities as needed in our environment. If you feel like you need to switch between your identities, does it also feel like you are acting at being one or the other? Does it ever feel like you are not someone who can just be, but rather someone who has to act at being anyone? What is that experience like for you? What would it feel like if you could comfortably and harmoniously be someone, rather than acting at being different people?
