Many Asian Americans grow up with intergenerational relationships as a prominent dynamic in their family home. For many younger generations however, there may be one big factor that heavily influences relationships with older generations - language. When there isn’t a strong shared language connection, it can create big gaps in which interactions can fall through. And it is increasingly common for a language gap to develop between different generations of an Asian American family, especially as newer generations come. Have you ever seen words, interactions, meanings, and connections fall through the loosest of weaves with people in your family? You may watch those interactions slip through the net, with the knowledge that you are missing something, but not the knowledge of what they were. When you see those words pass through the weaves, how do you respond? What does it make you feel?
