Misapply What Our Parents Taught Us

This is the challenge for us Asians in America. How do you say no to what seems like a compliment? From the very start we don't wish to be rude or inconsiderate. So we stay silent in our guises. We misapply what our parents taught us. Chang-Rae Lee

In Asian American families, there may be many cultural values and beliefs that are taught to the new generations. Those values can include: be polite, respect your elders, put others first, the needs of the group can be more important than the needs of one individual, and don’t speak unless spoken to, amongst other messages. When you live in a society where not everyone, especially those in the dominant culture, doesn’t value these same beliefs, it can be challenging. For example, you might be placed in positions where you misapply what your parents taught you. Has that ever happened to you? What are the circumstances where that’s happened? And what was it like to misapply what you were taught because of the circumstances you are in?
